your first site

If you don't have one already, you're going to need a DOMAIN NAME and a host for your site. The domain name (also known as the URL) should be close to your business name or tie in to your product or service. The most obvious choice for a domain name is your business name, but that may not be available nor appropriate (for example, if your company name was "Bigas Smama Corp." that would translate into "www.bigassmama.com" An extreme example, but you get the picture).

Before deciding, think about your product, your service AND your company name to come up with possible solutions.

The next step is to determine the availability of your domain name choices. There are several sites that offer this service, one of which is Network Solutions. (Type in your name options in the "Find A Domain" box.)

When it comes to purchasing your domain name, it would be prudent to look for at your Host Provider's plan - they may include that at a reduced cost.

Now that you have a domain name, you'll need a HOST PROVIDER. This is the company whose server will physically hold the files that make up your site. Most providers offer different hosting packages and you'll need to consider the function of your site (and future functions) before making a decision. For instance, will you need to process forms or make monetary transactions?

Recently, we've been recommending PowWeb.com. We have several clients hosted with this company and have been pleased with their price, service and features. However, they may not be the best choice for everyone. Before choosing a host, let's discuss your needs and help you find the best solution.
